What to Do When You are Going on a Downward Spiral

TulipsDo you ever find yourself going on a loop of negative thoughts leading to more negativity and tears? Do you feel like crawling under the bed and just crying at times?

I was feeling this way the other day. It felt like it was all doom and gloom and that there was no way out. It is normal to feel this way when we are going through any kind of transition and when we have more questions than answers.

It was interesting that soon after I started feeling this way, a friend called me out of the blue to touch base, and she even said it herself, I thought of emailing but decided to call, and she was glad she did. I was too, just sharing my feelings with her helped. Then, when I started getting myself back together, I got an email from another friend inviting me to go to Central Park in the evening to enjoy the tulips. The photo of this post is from that evening.

I didn’t want to show up all messed up and in my own drama, so I stopped what I was doing, and meditated. I asked for guidance and received so much more. My energy had shifted, my awareness of what’s possible had grown and I was feeling myself again.

What can you do when you feel you are going on a downward spiral?

  • Acknowledge what’s happening, and even say it out loud if you have to – I’m going on a downward spiral, I’m indulging myself in negative thoughts and beliefs, I’m not seeing a way out. By adding consciousness to what you are feeling, the energy immediately starts shifting as you create space for new and more affirming thoughts to come through.
  • Ask for help. In the aforementioned case, I didn’t reach out and the help came anyway, although I did make a choice to speak up and share when my friend called. I recommend that if you can acknowledge what’s happening, pick up the phone or email a trusted friend, and ask for a few minutes of attention to help you shift. Don’t call just to go on and on about all that’s wrong, you can share what’s not working, and then you can together come up with ways to shift your energy and let it go.
  • Ask for help from the universe. Many times when I’m feeling this way, I simply ask the universe to send me help. And here is an unusual way I’ve received the help once after asking: My neighbor’s dog started waiting for me as we walked upstairs, and he only climbed the floor above mine, after I had reached my door. It was the answer and care I needed, by a dog who barely knew me. 😉 Other times I’ve gotten phone calls, emails, texts…
  • Change the scenery. If you are feeling like you are going on a downward spiral and you can’t find your way out, get out of the house, hug a tree, go to the park, go to the beach, and breathe in nature.
  • Write. Dance. Speak. Paint. Sing. As a writer, I usually go write what I’m feeling and I start asking how I can change that situation. Whatever your mode of creativity is, go do it. Even if you are not an artist, I’d recommend that you create something, just write/dance/paint/sing whatever is in your heart at that moment, and just create a healing opportunity for yourself.

If you were asking for answers from the universe and found this article, here is to the shift in your energy and to climbing back up the spiral in a peaceful and comfortable pace.
