FlowersOver the years I met people who celebrate their birthdays in different ways. From one extreme of celebrating it for the whole month, to others preferring to hide, travel, disappear. I find myself in the middle. I enjoy the anticipation of the day, and sometimes I choose to spend it by myself and sometimes I celebrate it with others. I do enjoy taking in the love, through emails, phone calls, hugs, gifts, greeting cards and love messages. For a few years now, I add on my gratitude journal, how thankful I am for all those who remembered this special day.

It's important to be ready to take it all in and receive it. How do you celebrate your birthday? Are you truly open to receiving? And how do you celebrate your friends' birthdays?

On my birthday, I received messages wishing me more of what I want to create, more fun, more laughter, happiness, success, and most of all a happy day. It always feels special to receive calls from friends, from family, from other cities, from overseas, and as I enjoyed each and every call, each and every post on Facebook, and all the emails, I realized that people do enjoy when I remember their birthdays and I call or email them – even when it seems like it's not enough. Sometimes we take it for granted how the simple steps we take can make a difference in someone else's life, day or even a moment.

So, if you've been thinking about someone for a while and you have not reached out, even if it's not their birthday and you are thinking it is their turn to call, email, reach out, maybe go ahead and do so. They may be simply too busy, too sad, too involved in whatever they are doing to call. I'm sure they will be pleased to hear from you, and who knows, you may enlighten them for a moment, for a day or even for a lifetime.

In gratitude for all the messages I received on my birthday,

Namaste.
