In April 2012, I wrote the article Chaos, after both of my sites had crashed the previous month. I was able to re-launch this site then, only to have it crash again a few days later. I realized that a major makeover was needed, and took the site down again.

It’s been five months since, and that’s how long it took to re-launch this site. In reality, it didn’t take five months to actually re-launch it, it took this long to:

  • Be honest with myself that the sites as they were, could no longer exist; (a day)
  • Grieve the loss of the sites I created and built with love; (5 months)
  • Think about the best approach; (ongoing)
  • Research all options available; (ongoing)
  • Get referrals for a new hosting company; (asked trusted friends)
  • Discuss and invest in ways to protect the site from possible attacks; (exchanged emails with hosting company)
  • Take the leap and start transferring the domain names to the new host; (a few hours)
  • Decide if it was best to invest in a web designer or to do it myself – I’m sure you can tell which one I chose for now; 😉 (5 months)
  • Go through the process of recovering the articles from the previous website – and failing; (a few hours)
  • Realize that there was more grieving to go through, before the site would work; (a couple of weeks)
  • Have an A-HA moment yesterday and figure out what was wrong; (instantly)
  • Re-launch. (a few hours)

Through it all, I was able to honor my feelings and my resistance to put myself through the risk of crashing again. It is important that you take your time to research and decide on the best courses of action for your site and/or business, always respecting your own process and timing, and trusting your intuition.

It would be great to learn your own experiences of crashing and rebuilding, feel free to share them here.
